Must-haves for enjoying enduro in Aínsa (Zona Zero) this winter
Compartir
At Zona Zero Aínsa or BGuara in the Sierra de Guara, we are in the heart of the Sobrarbe region, surrounded by mountains, lakes, trails, and villages with centuries of history.
But if you come in winter, there is something you should know: the weather changes quickly, the terrain becomes demanding, and preparation makes the difference between an epic day and a difficult one.
In this article, we share—based on our daily experience at CincaRiders—what you must have in your backpack if you want to enjoy Zona Zero in winter to the fullest.
🧥 1. Technical clothing: warmth without losing mobility
During the cold months, in a single day you can wake up to fog (or boira, as we would say around here...), move into the midday sun with pleasant temperatures, and end the day with a freezing wind. That is why the key is to dress in layers using technical materials.
Our recommendation:
- Thermal base layer made of merino wool or breathable technical fabric (long-sleeved base layer from the cycling section at Decathlon).
- Enduro pants, preferably rain-resistant + cycling shorts with a good chamois.
- Mid-layer such as a softshell or fleece; in our case, we prefer a vest to keep our arms free.
- Waterproof and windproof jacket (minimum 10,000 mm).
- Waterproof gloves with good grip.
- Waterproof socks or shoes with a Gore-Tex membrane to keep your feet dry.
- Last but not least, a good Buff is essential if you don't want to lose your ears.
💡 Local tip: there are many areas here with ravines and small water channels, so you will definitely get wet. Quick-drying garments can save your day.
Don't forget to bring dry clothes to change into at the end of the route—a sweatshirt and comfortable shoes make the “after-ride” much more pleasant.
🔧 2. Basic MTB tool kit
The routes in Zona Zero are authentic, technical, and in many cases, remote. Being self-sufficient is important.
Your backpack or enduro hip pack should never be without:
- Multi-tool with a chain breaker.
- Mini pump or CO₂ cartridges.
- Tubeless plug kit (the stony terrain here demands it).
- Spare tube and quick link.
- Zip ties, duct tape, and a spoke wrench.
- Small first-aid kit and spare gloves.
💡 Rider tip: keep everything in a dry bag or waterproof hip pack; mud and rain are common at this time of year, and it also works for your phone.

🌧️ 3. Protection against rain, cold, and fog
Winter in Aínsa can surprise you with patches of fog or sudden downpours. Stay comfortable with these extras:
- Clear or photochromic lens glasses, perfect for changing weather.
- Helmet cover or extended visor.
- Face cream and lip balm to protect your face.
💡 Additionally, most accommodations and hotels in the area have space to clean and store your bicycle, something you will appreciate at the end of each day.

📱 4. Technology and safety: Ztrails is your best ally
Before you head out to ride, always check the trail conditions with the Ztrails application.
There you will find up-to-date information on:
- Trails closed due to hunting drives.
- Areas not rideable due to mud.
- Recommended routes according to the weather or season.
You can also download the tracks to your GPS or app (Komoot, Trailforks, Wikiloc) and always carry an external battery.
💡 Remember to check the weather forecast. Applications like Meteoblue offer forecasts and have an hourly weather radar that can help you choose the best route.

At CincaRiders, our rental bikes are specially prepared for the changing winter conditions:

🏠 6. After the route: cleaning, rest, and good food
The “post-ride” moment is also part of the experience.
In most hotels and accommodations in Aínsa, you will find areas designated for washing and storing your bicycle safely.
We recommend taking that time to clean your bike, stay well hydrated, and enjoy something warm in the old town of Aínsa—few places offer such peace after an intense day.
